MSc César Lamschtein

César Lamschtein was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1973. His passion for audio and music began at the early age of eleven. He decided to turn this passion into a career, earning a degree as a Senior Audiovisual Technician in France in the early 1990s.

The 1990s were a remarkable time to learn audio: they marked the final years of linear, analog production and the emergence of digital technologies and nonlinear workstations. Throughout his career, Lamschtein has had the opportunity to witness—and actively participate in—no fewer than three major paradigm shifts in both music and audiovisual production.

After returning to Uruguay, he worked as an engineer at several studios, taking part in music, theater, and film productions, as well as live sound mixing and recording. As his professional experience grew, he began working independently while also developing a career in consulting and education.

He has collaborated on productions with virtually all of Uruguay’s leading artists, as well as internationally renowned performers including Joe Satriani, Bajofondo, The Mission UK, Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Piero Gamba, Stefan Lano, Kitaro, Suzanne Ciani, Caetano Veloso, Djavan, Gilberto Gil, Pablo Milanés, La Oreja de Van Gogh, among many others. He currently serves as Sound Engineer for the Montevideo Philharmonic Orchestra, where he is responsible for both recording and live sound reinforcement.

Lamschtein has more than 25 years of experience teaching audio techniques and technologies. In 2010, Universidad ORT Uruguay presented him with its Award for Teaching Excellence. In 2015, the Audio Engineering Society honored him with the AES Citation Award, recognizing his outstanding and sustained commitment to audio education in Latin America. He is regularly invited to lecture at professional events and audio technology schools. In 2021 and 2022, Uruguay’s National Institute for Employment and Vocational Training invited him to certify candidates in the field of professional sound. He currently teaches at Universidad Da Vinci in Guatemala.

In 2012, after designing, installing, and commissioning Uruguay’s first world-class recording studio, he was appointed to lead the Audio and Video Department of the National Auditorium, the country’s largest, most prestigious, and best-equipped performing arts venue. In 2017, his audio systems integration design was selected as the winning proposal for the Antel Arena tender, providing equipment for Montevideo’s new and principal large-scale events venue. In 2022, he was commissioned to design and install the immersive, interactive playback system/instrument for James Turrell’s Takhut.

He continues to expand his knowledge and keep abreast of developments in the field by attending masterclasses with figures such as Bruce Swedien, Bob McCarthy, and Alan Parsons, as well as workshops, AES Latin American Conferences, AES Conventions, and other events organized by the Society. He further strengthened his academic qualifications by completing a Bachelor’s degree in Professional Audio in 2019 and a Master’s degree in Media Forensics at the University of Denver, Colorado, in 2024.

Lamschtein joined the Audio Engineering Society in 1996 as a founding member of the AES Uruguay Section and became firmly convinced that the Society provides an exceptional platform for sharing experience and remaining at the forefront of the profession. For nearly two decades, he has been a proud and active member of the Society, promoting student activities and recording competitions and organizing seminars, meetings, events, and conferences.

He received the AES Board of Governors Award in 2012 for chairing the 2011 AES Latin American Conference, and again in 2018 in Montevideo, Uruguay. He has shared his knowledge and professional experience through tutorials, seminars, lectures, workshops, and panel discussions in Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Mexico, France, the United States—including Los Angeles and New York—Ireland, and Peru.

He was elected AES Vice President for the Latin American Region for two consecutive terms and has also served as Chair of the Regions and Sections Committee and as Ombudsman. He is currently President-Elect of the Audio Engineering Society.
